Hey all, these are my completed UCM plastics from the 2 player starter set. I've got the same amount again to finish off, as I got 2 sets and swapped parts with a friend who is also starting.
As anyone who knows me can tell you, I hate painting. Hate it, detest it, worst part of the hobby (thank god for X-Wing, I for one welcome our pre-painted overlords). Therefore, any paint scheme for me has to:
A: Require the minimum of work.
B: Look passable at a 3 foot viewing distance.
C: Fit the 'lore' of the game the miniatures are for.
For my UCM, having read the rulebook and the fluff, my inspiration comes from the 1997 Paul Verhoeven interpretation of Starship Troopers. While the film was a travesty if you was a fan of the book, it had the one upside of being a damn fine sci fi flick. For the UCM background, the military reverence, vast legions of foot soldiers and whole worlds dedicated to nothing but the military machine definitely evokes the almost WW2 Russian commu-fascism of the movie. That gives me a nice easy paint scheme.
I decided I wanted something a little more colourful that the shades of grey from the movie, grey 10mm minis look like unfinished plastic at a distance after all. Therefore I went with:
Black undercoat. (Army Painter spray)
Dark Prussian Blue block coat. (Vallejo)
Gunmetal for... gun metal. (p3)
Light Blue for material and highlights (3 parts Prussian Blue to 2 parts White, Vallejo).
Armour Wash (p3)
Goblin Green for helmet visors/sensor pits, etc. because as everyone knows anything resembling a computer screen or HUD in the future has to be green.(Old GW paint)
It also gives a nice simple paint job.
1: Undercoat.
2: Block paint blue and silver.
3: Wash.
4: Highlight light blue.
5: Pick out visors and sensor pods, red for the few vehicle lights.
6: Photo and play.
The entire army took around 8 hours from undercoat to final basing on the legionnaires.
Mmmm. That new game smell.
2 slightly blurry Bear APC's.
Bear with Legionnaire Squad
Legionnaires Close-up
Kodiak Command Vehicle.
Rapier Squad 1
Sabre Squad 1
