So got the PHR Large Army deal at the weekend and have it all built and half painted, my eyes are playing up so painting detail is causing problems at the moment, and these guys are well detailed. Anyway they are great models and the rules read really easy.

Sweet sounds good.
Perhaps try and get some largeish 2v2 games at mine so we can all learn the rules together? I've got the table and the scenery all comes in the two player box sets.
Just had the notice from Wayland that my preorder has shipped, I ordered some extras to go with the two starter forces so can do 1000 points basic with a kodiac and command cards added, plus some extra fliers.

I came home from work for lunch so I could get my hands on it.

Looking in the box what you get is amazing everything is such high quality. The miniatures are so detailed for 10mm plastics can't wait to paint them.

I got started tonight, mam went to bed early after her flight and I'm well on my way. Very easy to put together, very easy to paint using drybrushing techniques. Should have 500 points finished in around 12 hours.

Brian, Martin and I played a game the other night, starter forces only. It was ok but both Brian and I struggled big time to damage the UCM force. With the exception of the Dropships and the infantry nearly everything is packing an Armour value of 10 and both Brian and I only had one weapon, single shot, tat could have a remote chance of damaging him, where he could nip around and destroy our forces quite easily Something wrong here ?

Yup, something very wrong.
You seem to have lined up one against one with your tanks, going by the one weapon one shot comment. Scourge is a fast moving swarm army, you should be lining up three of yours vs one of his, with around a 33% chance to do a damage point per 3 shots. On average rolls, 3 of your tanks will kill one UCM every turn. With a significant movement advantage over him, the idea is to nip in from behind cover, over load an enemy tank, then receive two shots back instead of three.
Try using the pop and drop tactic as well, this is where:
When you are last priority mover on the turn.
Activate your tanks as the last activation, move and fire. Win turn priority. Activate your tanks, fire then move back behind a building.
In theory, you should kill at least 2 UCM tanks without taking a shot back at all. Of course, there is the risk of not winning the next turn priority, but every tactic has a certain amount of risk vs reward.
Scourge are naff in a straight up fire fight, think of them like Eldar from 40k, sneaky high damage fast moving grav tanks that don't take too much of a hit in return.

Chris Brian is Shaltari and I am PHR no Scourge and your tactics don't work as we don't have the weapon power to get through the armout

Ah my mistake, thought you lads played off the 2 player starter boxes.
In that case:
Shaltari need to repeatedly gate and redeploy to the flanks on every turn. It's all about overwhelming the enemy to your advantage in a small area before relocating away to over power them again. Shaltari are the most maneuverable army in the game. Warp in with a 2/3-1 odds advantage and you should crack any target in the game. The general consensus on the Hawk forums is that Shaltari are the most powerful army in the game currently.
PHR need to avoid going for a straight up fight. They excel at blowing down building and area denial. I presume you were playing objectives and not just a straight up fight? If you were just doing a blow-em-up points match PHR are the worst of the four factions, with massive disadvantages in movement and firepower. You excel at blowing up the enemy building at long range, preventing their infantry from evac-ing objectives and making them come to you while your infantry get the objectives on your side of the board. This should give you several rounds of shooting as the enemy advances as you have the most long ranged weapons of any faction.
What scenario were you playing?

Chris this was a posssible 5 objective game played on a 5x4 table. I think you need to play the game some mate to see how the UCM is too heavily armoured. As I said if you play with the starter sets then the Shaltari, regardless of their movement capability, and the PHR, with their building destroying capability, have a very tough time taking out UCM armour.

Just going by what Hawk Wargames forums say mate, it doesn't look like I'll get a game in the foreseeable future. Generally, Shaltari are regarded as the best faction, UCM and PHR about equal, Scourge weakest except for when speed is required for objective runs. YMMV of course.
