Martin "lucky dice" Lee and I were run through a starter game of this system yesterday. The models are apparently 10mm but both of us agreed they are more 6mm, but very nice none-the-less. The range of free downloadable paper buildings really make the difference to the look of the game too as a lot of thought has been put into them. The game is you go I go with all units having move and fire ranges. All units start their game loaded in their dropships, suprisingly enough and then can move up and deploy, but when they deploy they cant fire. The units we had were infantry, anti-air, tanks and the dropships. At the beginning of each round you get to draw cards from you command deck equal to your command value (3), these cards can be useful to give you game changing events of power ups for a turn. The combats are resolved by chucking dice and refering to the hit tables where you look at the hit values against the defence value. In shooting thats not many dice, in close combat, CQB, that can be a lot of dice, we threw 29 in one attack and still messed up ;D. The game was objective and victory points based so at the end we had both grabbed an objective and got it off the table but as I had destroyed more of his units my side won. An interesting game but if you are gonna invest be ready to add to the starter force straight away as it doesnt do what you want, there are fighters, small dropships etc. Nicely done though Hawk Wargames.

This was a lot of fun! The game mechanics run smoothly and soon become second nature. You have to pay attention as your units can effectively 'split up' as the action develops.... making the game very tacticaly interesting! The models are first-rate with a lot of thought having gone into the designs to make each race distinct. VERY good quality resin castings (of even the more delicate details) contribute hugely to the appeal of this game! Sci-Fi fans will see familiar elements in some of the vehicles.... some are reminiscent of GW's Tau, "Aliens" gets a nod while, for me, Babylon 5 looks like a major inspiration! All good stuff! This game is well worth keeping an eye on!

Hawk wargames has just released a new plastic starter set. its reasonably priced at £54 and you get a lot in the box. Been wanting to start this game, since its release at salute 2012. Would anyone be tempted to have a dabble in this game and split a starter set with me in the near future.

Damn! I'm tempted..... I love the look of the UCM! The boxed starter sets seem MUCH better value for money! I was impressed with the quality and the concepts....... As usual... rather a lot else going on atm! :/ Will promise to join you guys soon!

I used to feel the same way Jonald. But the only thing that has change my mind is the new plastic starter set due to be released. If you do it like me and chris and get a starter set each with some one else and swap the contents you get a large army and loads of other extras for £55.

Jon, if you watch the BoW video I posted further up the thread they do a full unboxing of all the contents. - 156 page, full-colour, A4 size revised 1.1 edition rulebook - UCM Starter Force - 3 Condor Medium Dropships, 3 Sabre Main Battle Tanks, 3 Rapier AA Tanks, 2 Bear APC's (+1 spare), 30 Colonial legionnaires with bases - Scourge Starter Force - 3 Marauder Medium Dropships, 3 Hunter Main Grav-Tanks, 3 Reaper AA Grav-Tanks, 2 Invader APC's (+1 spare), 30 Scourge Warriors with bases - Starter Urban Battlefield - 10 different pre-cut, pre-folded card buildings - 2 A1 double-sided posters showing stunning artwork and a road layout to make a 48" x 33" gaming surface - Small, medium and large blast / LZ templates - Fire Arc template - 50 assorted Scenario Object Tokens - Retractable keyring tape measure (1m/38" length) - Ten 14mm black D6 dice - UCM & Scourge reference sheets, turn sequence prompt and starter scenario Just the rulebook and one 500 point starter force in metal/resin would be £75, so finding a second person to swap the contents of two starter sets with would leave each person with: Rulebook, terrain, tokens etc. 1000 point force. For £54. Bloody good deal that. Martins going Scourge, I'm going for UCM. We'll combine the terrain pack at my garage and we'll have a straight out of the box 6 x 3 sci fi themed table to play on

It all sounds like a great idea! The UCM are my army of choice so far...... So, it's possible for Jonald and I to split a couple of the starter sets! We shall have to talk Jon! With regret, I have to mention that my health has suffered something of a setback in the last few weeks......... very little work has been done. So I won't make any promises that I might find it difficult to keep........
