Does anyone own SAGA warbands? It's a historical skirmish game set in the early to mid dark ages (ca ~600-1100) involving the typical Vikings, but also with options for Skraelings (North American Indians), Danish, Anglo-Saxons, Anglo-Danish and Byzantines among others. I know Martin H and I both have Warbands, and we've been having a look at getting some more games in some time soon. Mostly I ask, because having had a new look at the forums after an absence that there are now fan lists for Samurai, Napoleonic, Ancient and Medieval warbands and warboards. The game has some very good and unique mechanics, including the rolling of order dice to see which of your units can activate and having special faction specific abilities such as the Saxon shield wall which you can spend order dice on in order to buff your troops at the cost of potentially not activating a unit. It's a game I love, with a small buy in cost (£40-60 box sets buy you a full size army) and a rather unique set of mechanics, it's something I really want to play more of this year. As you can see the miniatures are quality, this is a picture of the Anglo-Saxon warband which is £44, and is a full size army. This is what I have, and Martin H has Skraelings which is £50. Also for Steve: A few of the guys on the forums are working on a Roman battleboard, you might get a run out for your Legion

Still very interested in this game, having played it that one time down at TTN with Chris and Martin. With Crimbo money to spend I am thinking I might invest in a Norman army, rules etc. Anyone else fancy getting in on some historical gaming for not much layout ?

I've got Vikings, Saxons and Normans at 6 points each, will be getting Byzantines at some point, as well as investing in the new Crusade version when it comes out next summer. Steve: grab the 1/1 army deal from here for £40. www.conquest-games.co.uk/index.php?cPath=22_39grab a pack of crossbows for £2.50 from here www.vexillia.ltd.uk/mirliton/shop25_weapons.htmlYou'll save money on the equivalent starter army from Gripping Beast, which is £51.50. The only thing you wont have is the unit of 12 levee with bows. However, as a professional army with lots of board boxes for Cavalry peasant levee are pretty much a non entity in Norman lists. Everyone I know who plays them (including me) swaps the levee from the starter for a point of Norman Warriors with hand weapon and shield straight away. The plastics set will give you: 12 Norman Knights instead of 8, this could make you 12 Hearthguard or 8 Hearthguard and a Warlord. Personally I'd add an extra sprue of horses from Conquest so that you can use all 15 Knights from the box, 12 Hearthguard AND a Warlord. www.conquest-games.co.uk/index.php?cPath=28_2944 plastic Infantry will work out as 32 Warriors with Hand Weapon and Shield, 8 Warriors with Crossbow, 4 left over for converting into a Commander/Standard Bearers. That works out as Commander - Free 12 Hearthguard - 3 points. 32 Infantry - 4 points. 8 Crossbowmen - 1 point. 8 Points is absolutely bloody massive in SAGA terms. Cons are: Not the lovely metal figures from Gripping Beast. I used Conquest Games minis for my Normans, as well as using them for my Crusaders that I'm working on for the summer.

I have to admit, not one that has grabbed my attention atm..... Would like to see it played sometime, I'm easily seduced! Maybe the Templar and/or Roman versions would be more to my taste!?

Sprue shots here mate, bloody high quality. antonswargame.blogspot.co.uk/2012/09/conquest-miniatures-28mm-norman-foot.htmlGripping beast Dark Age Warriors box set can be used as levees if you really want them, you get a box of 40 for £20, enough for 3 points of melee/sling levee with extras. You need the rulebook, that comes with the Norman board, and you need the dice (or make your own, blank dice and a marker pen/printer). Markers and the measuring rulers aren't absolutely necessary, you could use dice to measure fatigue and a standard tape, but they add some flavour to the experience. Rules for Normans - www.grippingbeast.com/product.php?ItemID=268441467Norman Dice - www.grippingbeast.com/product.php?ItemID=1338Rulers - www.grippingbeast.com/product.php?ItemID=268441626Norman Fatigue Markers - www.grippingbeast.com/product.php?ItemID=268441629Again, you don't absolutely need them. Martin and I thought they were worth it though. Come over mine if you want a game with my stuff for a refresher. This is the first expansion, it includes rules and boards for 4 more Warbands, as well as rules for Standard Bearers. www.grippingbeast.com/product.php?ItemID=268441472 It is NOT needed to start playing the game. Ravens Shadow is the second expansion, as memory serves it doesn't add much in the way of new rules, just more Warbands and boards. I'll dig it out later and have a butchers. The Byzantine/Slav expansion I havn't got yet. Martin: There isn't a Roman version as such, the only Romans are later thematic Byzantines. Templars should be good in the summer though! Will be using Perry metals for that, expensive, but the models are so worth it. This is me and Martin Ds favourite and most played game by far.

Fireforge Games do some nice Templars..... I have a box of mounted Knights and I believe foot soldiers are in the works (if not out already!) I prefer plastics myself.... easier to convert and the paint stays on longer!

Mounted foot have been out for a while mate, the Crusader range is practically complete.
Then they went a bit pants on head and decided to do Mongols next instead of Arabs.......

Got made redundant two weeks before Christmas mate. Working for an Agency in a local factory now, monday-friday 7:45-16:45 so I'm free from about 17:30 or so every night, free every weekend. Can start gaming in about three weeks, Elizabeths funeral is on the 10th Jan so going to busy for a little while yet.

Get on board Jon. Then we can persuade Martin to play too. That way there are 6 of us who have armies. Now the question is can you play more than 1 v 1 ?

Yes you can, there are rules for multiplayer scenarios in the main rulebooks.
Apparently, they're also working on a multi-player supplement pack.
